Helping people find one lesson in 157,000

An Arabic Islamic library with tens of thousands of books, lessons and recitations. Midad never had a content problem. It had a finding problem.

The challenge

Midad holds more than 157,000 lessons, 7,600 books, 27,800 articles, 1,265 complete mushafs and 10,500 scholars. No menu can hold a list that long. Search does not solve it either, because most visitors do not know the exact title — they know they want a particular reciter, or a scholar they heard once, or a topic. So they arrived, could not find it, and left.

Our approach

We asked people how they actually look for religious material. They gave us three answers, so we built three ways in: by type, by scholar, and by topic. Every page connects to the other two, so a visitor who lands on a recitation can jump to that reciter's other work or to the subject it belongs to. We also reset the typography for long Arabic reading, since people stay on these pages for a while, and fixed the bugs users were already complaining about as part of the same pass rather than afterwards.

The outcome

Three ways into the same library, and a reading experience built for Arabic rather than adapted to it.

  • The UI/UX cover, with the library open on a laptop and a phone.
  • What the site is for, with the filter and Quran browsing screens.
  • The site's features, including the audio player and the lecture series.
  • The site's approach, with the book and audio listings on mobile.
  • The full interface, across desktop and mobile.
  • The Quran section, with recitations filtered by reciter and narration.
